Boulder, CO Acupuncturist Explains: How Does Acupuncture Work?

Boulder, CO

The foundation of health according to Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine is Flow. Acupuncturists have a saying "Where there's pain, there's no flow; where there's no flow, there's pain." This is true whether you live in Boulder, CO or Kathmandu.

In a nutshell, acupuncture promotes flow.

There are two perspectives from which to explore the mechanisms of acupuncture: the Western Biomedical lens and the Traditional Eastern lens. Here, we’ll explore the Biomedical mechanism of acupuncture for promoting flow, health, and healing. Later, we’ll explore the how acupuncture works through the traditional Eastern lens.

From a Biomedical perspective there are (at least) 4 major mechanisms of action:

  • Nervous system regulation - acupuncture can calm and relax the nervous system or stimulate it according to the needs of the individual.

  • Hormonal modulation - acupuncture can balance and calibrate the hormonal systems to reduce stressors and increase optimal functioning.

  • Vasodilation - acupuncture expands the blood vessels to increase access of nutrient-rich oxygenated blood to deficient areas. Increased blood flow leads to better function of organs and faster more efficient healing of tissues.

  • Anti-Inflammatory - inflammation is a major component in pain and disease. Acupuncture reduces inflammation which is pivotal to healing and reducing disease and illness.
